Dermatology involves the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the skin, hair, and nails. Increasingly, it also focuses on prevention, said Dr. Mary Finnegan, who leads Braddock Finnegan Helget Dermatology in partnership with Dr. Blake Helget.
“There is quite a bit of data showing that procedures such as fractionated laser resurfacing can prevent skin cancer and pre-cancer,” she said, adding that it’s not just about sun exposure. Immunotherapy and chemotherapy can also increase skin cancer risk. “I consider melanoma a young person’s disease. We see it in the elderly as well, but it’s one of the highest incidences of cancers in younger people.”
The practice sees people of all ages and offers patient-centered features such as convenient parking and an efficient check-in process, and often can accommodate same-day or next-day appointments. Plus, the staff tries to schedule patients for multiple procedures in a single appointment when possible.
“We do a lot of layering of procedures,” she said. “You can have down time all at the same time for different procedures that have different purposes.”
